How to Wear the Slip Dress

By Amra B.

The slip dress is a ’90s trend that has returned full force and has become a staple piece for this season. Personally, I love slip dresses for being amazingly feminine and extremely comfortable to wear.

The slip dress is minimal, chic and sexy; it is usually characterized by the thin straps, slightly loose cut, and is made from silky/thin (lingerie type) of material. The slip dresses come in different styles and lengths. Below are some tips on how to wear the slip dress this spring/summer:

1990s Slip Dress

1. Opt for a slightly looser fit: slip dresses are not meant to be too tight or too loose. The fit has to be just right for your body and getting it tailored to fit perfectly might be a wise choice.

2. For a daily look, add layers: slip dresses tend to remind us of lingerie and the best way to keep it day appropriate is to add layers. I recommend a denim shirt/jacket for a weekend casual look, or a lengthy blazer for the office.

3. Add the right shoes: to make the slip dress more day appropriate, I suggest wearing flats. For a date night, strappy sandals are the best choice.

4. Keep the accessories to the minimum: this style is not meant to be worn with heavy jewelry. A thin bracelet or/and necklace is all you need.

Wishing you an amazing day! XOXO.

Body Weight Training: Pros and Cons

By Sarah Baker

Are you looking for a new way to work out and get in shape? Have I got an exercise for you! Body weight training is the newest exercise on the scene. Body weight training are strength training exercises that do not require free weights or equipment of any kind; your own weight provides the resistance and helps to build strength.

Pros and Cons of Body Weight Training:

You may wonder what’s so great about body weight training. The answer is so much!

Pros:

1. They offer efficient workouts. Since there is no equipment involved, it’s easier to transition from one exercise to the next, thus allowing a shorter rest time and allowing you to burn more calories.

2. It’s cardio and strength training combined. You are able to do quick cardio between your strength exercises. Try 1 minute burpees or a set jumping jacks. This will allow you to keep your heart pumping while developing muscle and strength.

3. You burn fat fast. Even if you are only able to do a few minutes of bodyweight circuit training, it can really rev up your body’s metabolism.

4. There is truly something for everyone. You can easily modify exercises for your own fitness level by adding and taking away reps or speeding up and slowing down.

5. It improves your core strength and flexibility. Completing these exercises through a full range of motions can be good for improved posture, can help to insure your joints more freely, and can reduce the chance of exercise related injury. It can also improve your athletic performance.

6. It’s really convenient. You don’t need any equipment, so you can literally squeeze a workout in wherever you are. It’s a great hotel room workout for travelers. You can also do a workout at work it you are feeling some extra stress.

7. It reduces boredom. A lot of people stop working out because they get bored quickly. With these exercises, there are countless options and variations, so you’ll never get bored.

8. It’s inexpensive. Since there is no equipment required, you don’t need a gym membership and can do it anywhere, therefore the cost of this workout it absolutely FREE!

9. Results! Results are amplified because of the core strength that is being developed. Research shows that improved core strength gained through body weight training translates into inspired strength gains throughout the entire body.

Cons:

The only potential con of body weight training is that since you use only your own body weight, the weight you lift will never be greater than your own weight. This can be difficult for some who want to achieve a certain level of intensity. Adding additional weights or altering the leverage point can help to add to the intensity.

Exercises:
Here are some examples of body weight exercises and the areas that they work to get you started. Just remember, like in every type of exercise, make sure that you warm up before you begin your workout and cool down after.

1. Push Ups. They work your chest, triceps, and shoulders.

2. Handstand Push Ups. They work your shoulders, trapezius, and triceps.

3. Planche. They work your full body.

4. Dips. They work your arms, specifically the triceps, chest, and back.

5. Plank. They work your core (abs, back, and shoulders).

6. Sit Ups. They work your abs and hip flexors.

7. Crunches. They work your abs.

8. Russian Twist. They work your abs, especially your obliques.

9. Leg Raises. They work your abs and hip flexors.
10. L-sit. This works your obliques and arms, specifically triceps.

11. V-sit. This works your obliques and arms, specifically biceps, brachialis, and abs.

12. Pull Ups. They work your upper back, specifically rear deltoid, trapezius, erector spinae, latissimus dorsi.

13. Muscle Ups. They work your upper back, specifically rear deltoid, trapezius, erector spinae, latissimus dorsi.

14. Human Flag. This works your abs and shoulders.

15. Bridge. This works your back, specifically deep spinal muscles, arms, specifically triceps, upper legs, and increases flexibility.

16. Hyperextension. This works your lower back and erector spinae.

17. Squats. They work your legs.

18. Calf Raises. They work your calf muscles.

If you’re anything like me, you want to work out, but there is always an obstacle in the way. For me, I get bored quickly by doing the same thing over and over. I feel like all the gyms close to me are too expensive and actually too far away. I’m not a big fan of the gym anyway, there are too many people there to stare at me as I do everything wrong. My biggest excuse is that I just don’t have time. With body weight training, my excuses are mute. I can do it in the comfort of my own home or in my backyard if I want to. This erases most of my excuses because I don’t even have to deal with a gym at this point. Plus, with so many variations, I can mix it up every day if I want to to keep it fresh. I can also squeeze in this exercise whenever and wherever. So Fashionistas, if you want to get in shape, lose the excuses, join me! Let’s do this together!

Chicago Latin Film Festival Presents…

By Darlene Vazquetelles

Edited by Therese Mulgrew

The Film Industry in a Nutshell:

There is an exciting world out there in the movie industry that many people have yet to experience. As actors, we often get asked when and in which movie theater our movie is going to be shown.  Not every film makes it to the theaters.  Some go straight to DVD or TV. Then you have the film festivals.  Typically held annually all over the world, film festivals shed light on independent films, up-and-coming actors, and unique genres.

 The Chicago Latin Film Festival:

Me (left) at the Chicago latin Film Festival and (bottom right) filming the film Mi Princesa

My heart is full with happiness and pride as the Chicago Latin Film Festival wraps up. It was truly an amazing experience where stories were told through the eyes of filmmakers from all over the world.  For us to be able to show Mi Princesa, a movie in which I had my first role as a lead actress, was an honor. We were one of the films representing my island, Puerto Rico.

Me with my fellow actor Roberto Perez Perez
My Princesa:

Our first presentation of Mi Princesa was on Saturday, April 12.  I did not know what to expect.  Fortunately, we had a full house.  Traditionally, at the end of a movie being presented at a festival there is a Question & Answer’s session in which the audience is given the unique experience of being able to interact with the actors, directors, producers, or others who have worked on the film. This was one of my favorite parts of the entire process. Being able to explain different aspects of working on the film, the decisions made as an actress, and answering other questions from the audience was such an honor.

Me at the premiere of the movie
Words cannot describe how I felt as I spoke to each and every one of the people that came to me after we exited the stage.  As an actress, it’s typical to experience many ups and downs in regard to your career. At times insecurities, and fear can take over. It can be an unstable lifestyle that can be difficult to balance. But moments like these, when you receive immediate feedback and you get to see first-hand how an audience is effected by your work, is when you are doing what you should be doing. I met so many beautiful people this past week. People who had insightful words of encouragement, no agendas,  and simply love and respect for my work.  My heart was crying tears of happiness.

Me with Mi Princesa director Carlos Jimenez Flores
Attending these Film Festivals, you not only get the opportunity to interact with the audience but also with fellow actors, directors, and producers who are out there presenting their latest work of art, their joy in life, their “babies.” Through the daily luncheons provided by the swell festival organizers, we had the opportunity to meet, talk about our projects, make connections, share our experiences in the film making process while, of course, enjoying some great wine and food as well.

Met Colombian actor Manolo Cardona
How beautiful it is to sit in a room with people from completely different countries and backgrounds but with one huge thing in common: a love for creating films.  It has been one of my biggest gratifications so far. I will forever treasure the experience, the inspiration, and the kindness I received at the Chicago Latin Film Festival.

Me with the Chilean actress Paulina Garcia.
She received the Career Achievement Award at the festival.
I encourage everybody to support film festivals.  You learn to appreciate this art form in a whole new way, at the same time, learning about other cultures.  Aside from our movie, Mi Princesa, I was able to attend various movie viewings. I was so inspired by the beautiful cinematography and storytelling. There is no need for a Hollywood budget to make a great movie. All you need is a good story to tell and a group of passionate artists who have the urge to create.

I want to highlight the movies “El Faro” (Colombia-Dir. Pacho Bottia),  “No quiero dormir sola”  (Mexico-Dir. Natalia Beristain), “I am from Chile” (Gonzalo Diaz), “Somos gente honrada” (Spain Dir. Alejandro Marzoa), “Corazon de Leon” (Argentina- Dir. Marcos Carnevale), and short film “Eggman” (USA-Dir. Victor Martin) as some of my favorites from the week.

I also want to thank festival director, Pepe Vargas, for a well-organized festival and for always being present and available for anything we needed.  Congratulations on a successful 30th year Anniversary of the Chicago Latino Film Festival.

When to Love, When to Let Go

By Rachel Burt

Edited by Therese Mulgrew

How true is the phrase:
“If you love someone, let them go?”

I can’t stop the tears falling from my eyes when I witness the letting go of true love. We watch all sorts of tragic movie endings in which one character is forced to “let go” the one they love for a better future. I always contemplated what I would do if that situation were to happen to me. Is it fair to have to let someone go? I am a true believer in love, the raw and organic kind, pure and innocent, and everlasting. I believe once you find this feeling, there is no reason to have to “let it all go.” We are not butterflies, we are human beings with a heart, soul, and mind and what the heart wants, the heart wants.

Me (corner right)
This is how I let go:

I let go in those moments when I lose myself in the music and my body gets lost with me.

I let go when I laugh the kind of laugh that leaves me crying, falling to the floor, and gasping for air.
I let go every time I allow myself to feel deeply, without holding back anything.
Me (corner right)
A Message in a Bottle…

I remember once you told me you wouldn’t let me go, even if I wanted it to be over, you weren’t letting that happen.

I guess letting go is changing who I am. Changing the cycle of events that have been circling around us.

But I cannot say I’m ready to give it all up. To me, letting go is being honest with myself and to those who I love deeply, unconditionally, and forever.

I don’t just hope the best for you. I hope the world for you. I hope you smile and laugh and feel just as deeply as you always have. I hope you are true to yourself and the people around you. I hope your dreams are as big as the moon so that they light up the whole sky. I hope you see the beauty of the world in each moment.

And in the end, if you do change your mind, no matter when or where you and I are in the world, I hope you come find me.

Bohemian Kimono

By Amra B.

Kimonos are one of my favorite boho inspired pieces and they are absolutely perfect for spring and upcoming summer. This beautiful garment originated in Japan where it was a major focus of interest and artistic expression. According to the Victoria and Albert Museum archives, ” In kimono it is the pattern on the surface, rather than the cut of the garment, that is significant. Indications of social status, personal identity and cultural sensitivity are expressed through color and decoration.” [1]

Modern day kimonos often include fringes and tribal prints (or flowers like mine below). Kimonos are easy to wear as they can be thrown over any ensamble. I like to combine mine with denim for a more laid-back-boho look, but they work equally well with a more formal attire such as dress pants and dress shirts.

As one of the most versatile pieces, kimono is also a great addition to a bikini for a total laid-back-yet-elegant look next to the pool/beach. Below are some of the photos of my favorite kimonos, including my own kimono ensabmle.

Enjoy! XOXO

Casual Chic

By Amra B.

I am the most comfortable while wearing a pair of jeans and a t-shirt; there is nothing easier to put on while you are laying around the house or running errands. However, I am also a big advocate of looking stylish even with the simplest of fashions. The idea is that you can make the most basic tee/sweatshirt look great if you pair it up with a great pair of jeans/pants and then add some accessories.

Below are some of my tips for looking amazingly (and casually) chic:

1. Contrast makes the simple designs stand out: I like to pair darker sweaters with lighter jeans or lighter shirts with dark/leather jeans (below).

2. Add trendy sneakers: I love the wedged sneakers because they make you a bit taller and make even the extremely casual outfit a little more dressier. Flat sneakers are ok, but I would advise against any your gym shoes.

3. Add a button down shirt: I am loving the trend of a button down shirt tied around the waist. Besides giving you an option of extra clothing (in case it gets cold), layers always make a simple outfit a little more interesting.

4. Add bright lipstick: adding a bright lipstick makes an otherwise boyish outfit a little more feminine. I am really into the orange/coral color for spring (I have gotten quite tired of all the holiday red…).

Wishing you an amazing day!

What Sunglasses Best Fit Your Face Shape

By Nerina Hodzic Poplata

For me, sunglasses are part of everyday life– both in the summer and the winter. They protect your eyes from the sun  in the summer and also protect your eyes from the snow glare in the winter. Moreover, sunglasses are ideal to cover-up dark eye circles or just to go incognito when without makeup. Lastly, sunglasses can even be used as a headband to get any unwanted hair from your forehead.

Below, first, I will let you know what type of sunglasses are trending this season; second, I will give you styling tips on how to choose sunglasses that best fit your face shape. (And, yes, we already did a post on what sunglasses best fit your face shape but I wanted to provide my own take…)

Me & my Sunglasses

I. What Sunglasses Are Trending This Season?

This season, we see designers start new trends with sunglasses. So, what is trending with sunglasses?
  • Cat-eye.
  • Polygonal shaped.
  • Large celebrity sunglasses.
Let’s take a look at examples from luxury designers…

The Classic Look: Ralph Lauren Eyewear

Trendy: Tom Ford Sunnies

Italian Godess: Dolce & Gabbana Sunglasses

Also, what are some trendy frame colors?
    • black
    • beige
    • burgundy
    • animal print (in multiple variations)

    Trending frames

II. Which sunglasses best fit your face shape?

    A. Heart-shaped face: try aviators. Angelina Jolie has a heart shaped face, she looks spectacular in aviators, which she sports very often.

    Angelina Jolie in aviators
    B. Round face: oversized rectangular frames look very chic.  Check out Alexander Wang’s and Prada’s oversized rectangular frames. Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen have round faces, check out their specks.

    C. Oval face: try cat-eye frames. Brands I recommend are Miu-Miu and H&M. Olivia Palermo has an oval face shape, and she has been spotted wearing cat-eye frames.

    D. Angular face: try retro circular frames. The brands I recommend are Miu-Miu and Stella McCartney. Beyonce has an angular face; the retro circular frames look very hip on her.

My favorites? Dolce & Gabbana with gold leaves! Take a look below!

    A difficult choice for me…
Let me know which sunglasses you choose this season! Until next time, signing-off from Sarajevo, xoxo.

    Bosanski/Bosnian:

    Dolce & Gabbana
No, ipak sa proljećem krenu reklamne kampanje slavnih dizajnera sunčanih naočala i svako, ali baš svako proljeće mi se dopadnu neke novog oblika.

    Dior reklamna kampanja

The Surprising Health Benefits of Coconut Oil

    By Rachel Burt

    Edited by Therese Mulgrew

If you were to travel the world looking for a group of people who enjoy a degree of health far above that found in most nations, you would find them in many of the island natives of the South Pacific and the Americas. So, the question is, what is their secret?

Coconut oil. In this article, I will discuss the many health benefits of using coconut oil as a beauty ointment as well as a delicious cooking ingredient.

Coconuts have been used as a major source of food for thousands of years by millions of people in Asia, the Pacific Islands and Central America. Before the introduction of modern foods, many of these people depended almost entirely on coconut to sustain life.  It was not until they started abandoning their traditional coconut-based diet and started eating western, pasteurized foods that they began to suffer from the modern degenerative diseases.

    I. How It Does Wonders:
Nearly 50 percent of the fat in coconut oil is a rarity in nature. This type of fat is called lauric acid and it is a “miracle” compound because of its unique health promoting properties. Your body converts lauric acid into monolaurin, which has anti-viral, anti-bacterial and anti-protozoa properties.

Coconut oil is also nature’s richest source of medium-chain fatty acids (MCFAs), also called medium-chain triglycerides or MCTs. By contrast, many common vegetable or seed oils are comprised of long chain fatty acids (LCFAs), also known as long-chain triglycerides or LCTs which are stored as fat when digested.
The difference between MCTs and LCTS is that the smaller chain fatty acids found in coconut oil (MCTS) are easily digested and are burned by your liver used for “energy,” helping boost your metabolism, energy, and making you leaner.
II. Treatment uses for coconut oil:

    Promote loss of excess weight
Helps remove the appearance of cellulite and stretch marks
Supports the development of strong bones and teeth
Prevent heart disease, high blood pressure, atherosclerosis, and stroke.
    Aids in digestion and metabolism
Kills viruses such as influenza, shingles, herpes, hepatitis C, measles, AIDs.
    Supports immune system
    Prevents premature aging
    Helps lure off germs.
Kills fungi and yeast that cause candida, jock itch, ringworm, athletes’ foot, and other skin infections.
Prevent damaging effect of UV radiation from the sun such as wrinkles, sagging skin and age spots
    Prevents tooth decay

You can begin enjoying the benefits of coconut without making any drastic changes in your everyday life.

III. Incorporating coconut oil can be done in three easy steps.

    A. Eat your way to better health by using coconut oil in your cooking and get rid of the other vegetable oils in your diet. Coconut oil can be separated into two categories:

    1. Refined, bleached, and deodorized (striped of its nutrients and benefits)

    2. Virgin and unrefined. Make sure this is the kind you always buy!

    B. Eat coconut products regularly within your diet. For example, coconut water or pure coconut.

    C. Apply coconut oil directly to your skin and hair in order to absorb its healing benefits directly into your body.

IV. Using Coconut in Your Kitchen:
Thanks to the raw diet movement and growing popularity of vegan diets, interest in coconut has increased even more. Incorporating coconut oil into your cooking is the most palatable way to get the daily dose and is the easiest way to measure how much you are actually using. Here are some guidelines on why and how to use coconut in your kitchen.

Butter. The oil has a solid, lard-like consistency below 24°C, so can be used to replace butter in recipes where the texture is important – like rubbed crumble toppings, or pastry.

Cooking oil. Coconut oil melts at about 76 degrees F, becoming a clear liquid that looks like almost any other vegetable oil.

Because coconut oil is primarily a saturated fat, the heat of cooking does not create a free-radical soup, it is THE ONLY oil that can withstand the heat of cooking without damaging its nutrients and turning toxic.

It has a very mild flavor that can be used to cook any type of food (pastries, pastas, stir-fries, rise, creamy sauces, fried foods, salad dressings, etc.).

A hot beverage. You can add coconut oil to most any type of hot beverage such as tea, coffee, hot chocolate, or hot cider for extra flavor.

Smoothie. Add it to your super-boost smoothie in the morning.
Regular use of coconut oil can make a dramatic difference in your life. If you are overweight it can help you lose excess body fat; if you have digestive problems it will help your body to better digest your food. It can help you feel and look younger, give you more energy, protect from infections and illnesses, and help prevent many degenerative conditions such as heart disease and cancer. Victoria’s Secret model Miranda Kerr has been quoted saying “I will not go a day without coconut oil.”
My new favorite Homemade Coconut Chocolate Recipe:

    Coconut Oil
    Organic Pure Cacao Powder
    Honey/Raw coconut sugar
    Sea Salt
    Almonds
    Coconut Shreds

    Directions:

Heat the coconut oil until it reaches that soup-like texture, add your cacao powder and raw sugar or honey and stir. After lay out on a glass-ware or stick-free plate and pour your creamy texture onto it. Later add crushed up almonds, pure sea salt( nice sweet/salty combination), coconut shreds and any other interesting ingredient you like, (once I added Almond butter, and this time oatmeal and raspberries). Freeze for 15-20 minutes and serve!

What’s Trending This Spring? Flower Power!

    By Nerina Hodzic Poplata

    Greetings fashionistas!

With warm and sunny weather comes spring and summer shopping. It is time to freshen-up your wardrobe; new season, new beginnings, right? So what are the latest spring must-have pieces?

Well, luckily, you will not have to update your wardrobe too drastically from last season as same and similar trends can be seen on the streets and shops of fashion meccas like London and New York City. So, here is the skinny…
    Spring trends
At the crux of the spring fashion throne are:

    • pastel colors
    • floral prints
    • geometric prints
    • transparent fabrics
    • crop-tops
    • boho fringes
    • gold and silver details on footwear and accessories.
What always keeps me on my toes is coming home at the end of the day with my numerous shopping bags, cutting off the price tags, and combining the newly purchased items with the timeless pieces in my closet. This season, there will be countless of opportunities to match floral prints with other patterns. Click here for our guide (6 simple rules) on how to match patterns.

To get the most mileage out of a spring item, I recommend a floral print shirt. It is perfect for many occasions, e.g., work, nightlife, dinner-date, a walk on the beach and brunch/coffee with friends. Shopping tip: look for floral print shirts online for a great bargain. Below, I have included some photos of outfit ideas on how to match a floral print shirt with shorts, pants, jeans, and skirts this spring and summer.

There you have it fashionistas, sending you well-wishes from Sarajevo, xoxo!

    Bosanski:

Veliki pozdrav dragi fashionisti!

    Cvijetni pozdrav!

Meo Out Jazz Festival: Music, Art, Food and Fun in Lisbon!

    By Rachel Burt
    Edited by Sarah Baker

Meo Out Jazz, Music, Art, Food and Fun!

Every Friday and Sunday evening in Lisbon, Portugal is the Meo Out Jazz festival. It hosts smooth jazz by some of the best DJs and musical performers. The Festival started with an idea from the event founder, Jose Filipe Rebelo Pinto, who wanted people to get to know Lisbon better. Meo Out Jazz brings together nature and urban culture with contemporary music, inviting people to gather and fall in love with the city together.

    For a Limited Time Only:

The festival usually only takes place from May through September in green spaces such as gardens and parks. I head towards the sounds of the music humming in the empty spaces of the historic streets and cafes. We were lucky enough to catch a quick glimpse of the 7th edition taking place inside at the Grand Museu Berardo (museum) for those artists and eccentrics this year.

Me enjoying the streets of Lisbon

    Venders!

For me, the most exciting part of art and music festivals is the venders lined up with extraordinary delicacies and tapas. My favorite is the fresh fish complimented with the luxurious Portuguese wine. A popular consumption for festivals would be the “snails and beer,” a refreshing snack made mostly for socializing.

    Happy Consumption:

The museum has a current exhibition called “Happy Consumption,” by Carla Fillipe. These collections date all the way back to the 1900s.  Her work from all over the world helps give spectators knowledge of the Portuguese railway system from a broader perspective that includes its geography, architecture, socio-political context and musealization. I was lucky enough to find a piece from one of my favorite artists, Andy Warhol.

If you love music and art, make sure you visit the Meo Out Jazz festival in Lisbon anytime between May and September. You’ll be sure to meet a lot of new people while enjoying some smooth jazz and falling in love with the city.
