Group Gym Classes: Which Should You Try?

By Sarah Baker

Are you tired of the same old song and dance at the gym? Are you only using weights or running? Do you need a change of pace? Then you need to consider trying some group classes. They are a great way to mix up your routine and have fun while working out. As a dancer, I have come across a lot of group classes over the years. These are some of the favorites that I, as well as fellow dancers, have come across:

1. Coyote Ugly Dance Class. This class is great for ab and leg exercises. It teaches you some dance moves that you could perform on top of a bar that require a lot of ab shaking and leg moving. Some friends and I just did this class this weekend for a bachelorette party and had a blast!

2. Zumba. You’ve probably heard of Zumba by now, but if not, it’s an aerobics class that uses Latin American dance moves to really work your core. I absolutely love Zumba! It’s something that I can do with friends in a class or by myself at home.

3. Bootcamp. I haven’t personally tried these classes, but many of my friends swear by them. The classes usually run about an hour long and build strength and fitness by using intense group intervals.

4. Hot Yoga. This is simply yoga performed under hot and humid conditions. Hot yoga varies in the benefits of regular yoga in ways such as increased flexibility, cardio, and detox.

5. Hip Hop/Dance classes. Just taking a hip hop or dance class can really burn some major calories and give you an intense workout. Dancing is what kept me in great shape throughout my high school and college years.

Fitness motivation
6. Pure Barre. This is one of the hottest new trends in fitness. Essentially, this is extreme ballet. Using a ballet barre, you work out your butt, thighs, abs, and arms. I like it because it combines ballet and the barre, which I am extremely familiar with, with some aerobics and cardio to get a full body workout.

7. Pop Physique. This one hour work out ballet barre-based class combines Pilates, dance, and barre. Your abs, posture, and flexibility are the focus of this class. It’s similar to Pure Barre.

8. Buti. This 75 minute workout that combines yoga, strength training, and tribal dance. It’ll really get your blood flowing and body moving.

9. Kickboxing. A constant staple that really helps if you need to get some aggression out. Besides being a great stress reliever, it’s great for your arms, shoulders, abs, thighs and butt.

Some people, me included, don’t like to go to the gym alone and definitely don’t like to take group classes solo. Partially because if I’m going to make a fool of myself, which tends to happen in workout classes, I want there to be someone there to laugh with and at me. The other reason is because I need someone to motivate me and make me go, even when I’m exhausted or have had a bad day. If there is someone else counting on me to go to the class, I’m more likely to go, even when I don’t feel like it. These classes are great to do with friends to keep you motivated and have fun at the same time. Try any of these classes with some friends or brave them solo, either way, you’re sure to have a blast and get a great workout in the process.

10 must-have closet essentials: advice of a fashionista

By Brittany Dobbins

I’m sure everyone wants to know what is inside a fashionista’s closet. It’s a secret place where a fashionista can go and pick out that one perfect piece of designer clothing. Nobody knows what that closet could have in it, (ladies never tell). What I can tell you is every fashionista owns…

10 must-have closet essentials for every fashionista…

Let’s start from the basics, shall we?

1. The classic black blazer.

You should have this in your closet. No ifs, ands or buts. It goes perfectly with a white tank and a pair of vintage denim shorts. Stars like Jessica Alba, Rachel Bilson and Kim Kardashian have all been seen in Hollywood wearing the black blazer.

2. Leopard Print Scarf.

Every girl loves prints, am I right? Well, the leopard print scarf is a big must-have closet essential. You can wear it with just about anything, maybe a t-shirt and jeans combo? I think going casual and not taking away all the attention from the scarf is a good choice.

3. The red ballet flats.

The red ballet flats are certainly a must-have because it just adds that pop of color to your outfit. You want people to be like “I want those flats, where did you get them?” Its things like that you have to keep an eye out for, because a fashionista wants to be noticed by everyone. These bright red ballet flats are perfect for summer and make the outfit even more vibrant!

4. Striped Shirt.

One of my favorite must-have closet essentials is the striped shirt. It can either be a tank-top or just a striped t-shirt paired with a great blue jean or some white vintage shorts, whatever you like! The idea is to wear something that makes you comfortable and the striped shirt does just that!

5. Statement Necklace.

The statement necklace has to be the most exquisite yet chic item a fashionista could own in her closet. Scarlett Johanson is seen wearing them on the red carpet all the time and she looks beautiful doing so! Statement necklaces turn your outfit into something so elegant and classy everyone is going to want that necklace! I mean, come on! It’s what every girl dreams of having. What’s that saying? Oh right…diamonds are a girl’s best friend!

6. The LBD (little black dress).

It’s one of those things that you need in your closet! You might see Kristen bell, Nina Dobrev and Jenna Dewan-Tatum wearing the famous LBD on the red carpet. You can wear it any way you like (halter, strapless, maybe a little V-neck action). Also pair it with your favorite necklace or statement piece, that way it doesn’t look too simple. (More on how to wear the little black dress: here.)

7. Black Tights.

Next we have the classic black tights! I actually had to wear tights for ballet classes when I was 10 years old. But they do help make your legs look thinner, which is what I really like about them, especially if you are wearing a dress! They look great with an all black fur coat and a pair of Louboutin heels! I really love that idea of an all black outfit (black on black) and I know all fashionista’s do too.

8. The Oversized Watch.

The oversized watch has become popular amongst the likes of Victoria Beckham, Jennifer Aniston, and Dakota Fanning. A fashionista always needs a little bling. The key to wearing any oversized watch is leaving it loose on your arm, so then it will look you are wearing a bracelet! Michael Kors has some of the most amazing oversized watches; I suggest that every fashionista should buy at least one from his collection!

9. Trench Coat.

The classic trench coat is basically like keep sake something you never want to take off! I really like that you can wear it over absolutely anything. It’s just a very sophisticated piece. Also makes you feel confident and strong. Fashionista’s want to feel superior, so that when walking on the streets of New York London or Los Angeles they can show off that classic trench coat! (More on how to style the trench coat here.)

10. Blue Jeans.

Last but not least is the ultimate must-have closet essential….the oh-so famous blue jeans! Every fashionista must have these in their closets. You can wear them with a black tank or white, maybe a bright red crop-top from H&M would be a nice pairing! It could literally be anything, that’s what is so great about blue jeans. Nothing is better than having a pair of perfectly fitted blue jeans in your closet.

Fall Fashion Week Predictions: Which Fresh-Faced Models and Designers Will We See?

By Catherine Santino

New York City’s Fall Fashion Week is a highly anticipated event. The speculation about which who we will see on the runways is almost as exciting as the event itself. Here are some models and designers that I think we will be seeing a lot of in the future:

Models:

Kendall Jenner: After landing a spot in Chanel’s Paris Fashion Week show this past Spring, there’s no doubt in my mind that Kendall will be dominating the runways this Fall. She has also walked for Givenchy and Marc Jacobs; these are some big names for someone still so new to the industry.

Models to Watch in the Fall:
Kendall Jenner and Cara Delevingne

Cara Delevingne: Cara was also seen in the Chanel runway show in Paris, as well as having walked in the Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show. Her look is unique and bold; her dark, bushy eyebrows serve as her trademark and are something we are seeing a lot more of lately. She is clearly a trend-setter, which makes her a highly sought after model. We will surely be seeing her on the runways in New York this Fall.

Mica Arganaraz: This up and coming Argentinean model has walked for Louis Vuitton and Miu Miu, as well as having appeared in several editorial campaigns. Her biggest campaign so far has been for Prada’s Fall 2014 collection. She is obviously making herself known in the fashion world, and I am sure we will be seeing much more of her.

Models to Watch: Argentinian Mica Arganaraz
Designers:

Paula Gerbase: Menswear inspired fashion is being seen more and more these days. It is for this reason that I believe we will be seeing a lot more of Paula Gerbase on the runways. Her androgynous designs are sleek, sharp and unique from a lot of other collections out there right now.

Sarah Richards: This young New York City fashion designer is bound to explode on the fashion scene here. Her innovative designs use fascinating combinations of bold colors and patterns, something I am seeing a lot of lately.

Elie Saab: Lebanese fashion designer Elie Saab creates some of the most stunningly gorgeous gowns that I have ever seen. His designs are bold, captivating, and downright beautiful. While he has been on the fashion scene for a few years now, I think we are all on the edge of our seats waiting to for his newest creations. I personally cannot wait to see what he does next, and will definitely be on the lookout for his work come this Fall.

There you have it, my predictions for Fall Fashion Week. The work of these models and designers is incredibly impressive, and I hope I get to see what they do this coming season!

Cougars- No Longer Just in the Wild

By Lizbeth Perez

When it comes to the subject of love, we always hope that there are no real significant barriers to its success. In our hearts, if not in our heads, we’re convinced that love will always trump practical concerns such as money, social class, race and even gender.

But what about age? And what about age as it relates to older women involved with younger men? Though men have been enjoying May-December romances forever, women haven’t been afforded the same freedom necessarily. Culturally, the older woman/younger man dynamic is perceived as an oddity, or a fluke.

Fortunately, that’s changing as more older-woman and younger-man couplings make headlines.

Mrs. Robinson in The Graduate

Actress Robin Wright, 47, is engaged to fellow actor Ben Foster, 33. Pop star Shakira is involved with a man 10 years her junior. Actor Hugh Jackman has been married to Deborra-Lee Furness for 17 years. She is 13 years older than her mate.
And though everything in Hollywood seemingly glitters, how well do the dynamics between an older woman younger work in real life? Is it doomed from the beginning? Is it really that hard? Is age nothing more than a number, or a harsh reality?

I myself have been lucky enough to have been blessed with an appearance that doesn’t reflect my real age. At 31, I’m far from old and even further from being a cougar to many. But, I guess the reality is that I kind of am…

I seem to be on a streak, the last three men I have dated have all been younger, with the most latest of the bunch being considerably younger with almost a ten year age gap between us. Physically, most people would never guess, and in fact the majority of people think that he is older. In my defense, this what I honestly thought when we first met, it wasn’t until I noticed that he always seemed to change the conversation when his age came up that there was something not quite right…

But, I digress.

I’ll be the first to admit that the chemistry and attraction between him and I is undeniable. But, there are definitely times when I find myself wondering if that’s really all that there is. We get along great, like to do a lot of the same things, and always have an amazing time when we are together.

But, not everything is rainbows and gumdrops. Though our age is not something that is visible to the naked eye, it is beyond palpable and ever-present in every other aspect, at least to me. His timing is horrible; he still lives with his parents, and seems to always put his friends first over me and finds nothing wrong with it. I won’t pretend that it doesn’t infuriate me, but then I usually sit back and realize that at his age I did the same exact things. I do my absolute best to try and give him the best advice I can for many situations he finds himself in because ultimately I don’t want him (or anyone) to go through the same things I once did. But instead of bringing us closer, sometimes all it does is make me focus on our age gap, or worst make me feel like his mother and not his girlfriend.

Of course, questions related to aging cropped up, naturally. We’ve both had moments where we have wanted to end it because we feel that we are both in too much of different places to continue. He’s asked me himself if I agree that being in a relationship at his age is something that should be done since it’s so hard. I’m of the frame of mind that believes relationships to be easy, since it’s dating that is hard. When you date, you are putting all this energy into the other PEOPLE liking you and impressing them, trying to find the right person to click with, while once in a relationship it’s just maintenance and growth with ONE person. As for my moments, they deal more with wondering about the future in general…I’m not sure if I ever want to get married or have kids, but what if one day I wake up and do?

And then there’s also the concern about one’s looks.

One woman I know, recently got married to a man 12 years her junior (she’s 44) and said the only time she feels threatened by her age is when she looks in the mirror.

But that fear has forced her to come up with her own solution to the issue.

“When you’re with a younger person, you have to think, ‘What’s going to happen in five years? Ten? Is he going to leave me?’ Your answer could be, ‘I’m going to get a facelift.’ My answer is, ‘I’m going to be such a beautiful person inside that it’s going to shine through to the outside…”

Is age just a number?
Is sticking to your own age the best option…

I may not know what the ultimate outcome will be with me and my current love. Perhaps we will be together for a long time; perhaps things will come to an end sooner than later. The one thing I am certain of is that so far, he makes me happy and has helped me to see and feel joy where I haven’t before and for that I am truly grateful. I’ve vowed to stop worrying about him running off with a much younger, thinner, prettier girl that he meets on a night he’s out with the boys. Instead, I plan on taking it one day at a time and focusing on how wonderful he makes me feel right now. He’s vowed to do the same. (Yes, even men worry about things like that, expect his worry is me meeting an older man who’s life is more together…)

No matter what your age, to go forward in life with an eye toward becoming a kinder, more loving person sounds like an infinitely wiser approach to keeping love alive than worrying over the inevitable appearance of laugh lines.

Denim Overalls

Amra B.

I am a huge fan of denim; if I had it my way, I would wear it to work, meetings, parties, formals, everywhere! Denim is flattering for any body shape, it is comfortable to wear, and looks so SEXY! YES; I feel my best in a pair of great jeans or denim shorts! One great trend that has come back full force for this summer is denim overalls; they are not just for kids anymore, and styled the right way, they look extremely chic and sexy!

The unique feature of the denim overalls is the flattering cut; they expose just the right parts of the body and hide the problem areas incredibly well. I also like how versatile they are: a quick change of shirt and shoes can transform your entire look. I wear mine with tanks, t-shirts, button downs, and top them off with amazing sandals, pumps, espadrilles, and even sneakers.

Here are some tips on how to wear your denim overalls for the best effect:

1. Leave some room to breathe: denim overalls are meant to be worn loose and they are more flattering when they are a size bigger.
2. Choose an appropriate top: tops that are too small will give the illusion of “muffin tops” even when you don’t have one. The deep cut on the sides draws attention to your abdominal area and having a top that compliments your waist is imperative.
3. Choose length: for the short denim overalls, pick the ones that are a little longer. Very short denim shorts can give the illusion of a boxy top and are not always the most flattering.

Wishing you an amazing day!

Is He or She the One? How to Know if You’re Compatible…

By Elena Watson
We all have that one friend. They’re cute, they’re smart, they’re a blast to hang out with – and they’re a dude. It seems like it should be simple. You’re single, he’s single – so why don’t you just date each other?

The truth is, when it comes to compatibility, particularly in matters of sex and dating, being great friends with a guy sometimes just isn’t enough to cut it. You may really care about your guy friend and love spending time with him, but it’s important to keep in mind that just because you two click as friends, it doesn’t always mean you’d make a great couple.

So how do you know when there’s a dude you’d be romantically and sexually compatible with?

This is a complicated question to answer. Here are some pointers…

1. Try to actually date him.

Sometimes it’s just a matter of going for it and seeing how things work out. If you date someone for a couple of weeks and still don’t feel any “spark,” it’s a pretty good bet that you guys just aren’t compatible in that way.

2. Are you sexually compatible?

Or if you start dating and find that you’re on the same level sexually as well as mentally, then you know you’ve made a good decision. However, there are also situations where you can tell you’d be compatible with a guy even before you take that next step.

This is that “spark” I mentioned. Almost everyone has experienced this feeling – when you just feel drawn to a person. Your eyes meet across the room; they lightly touch your shoulder; you both burst into laughter at the exact same time – and you feel a little jolt, almost like an electric shock. You want to get closer to this person. And you can tell that they feel the same way.

In a situation like this, the question of whether you’d be sexual compatible isn’t hard to figure out. This can be an awesome thing if you’re not looking for anything serious. Don’t get me wrong, if you are considering this guy as boyfriend material it can be awesome too! But it’s a good idea to keep in mind that, like guy friends, a dude whose physical appearance drives you crazy might not always make the best boyfriend.

3. Balance out the sexual compatibility with friendship.

Sexual compatibility is important, but so are a lot of other things – like how well you get along with him outside of the bedroom, whether he’s easy to talk to, whether he makes you laugh, and how much you actually like hanging out with him. In figuring out how compatible you are with a person, it’s good to try to find a balance of sexual compatibility and friendship. There are a lot of factors to consider, and it can feel a bit overwhelming at times but trust me – you’ll know it when you find it.

A New Kind of High- Hemp Beauty Products

By Rachael Shearer

While perusing the aisles of online shopping, I came across a series of creams, cremes, balms, salves… all containing hemp. Confused by why people would be lathering their skin in weed, I did a little research and decided to try out a few of these products. Turns out, hemp could be the best thing out there for your skin and actually won’t get you stoned in the process. Here’s the how, the why, and which products to try.

Where hemp comes from…
What is hemp? Don’t worry, this is the non-drug variety of cannabis – so you won’t get high from using these products. However, there are healthy highs to be found – fiber, oil, and seed. Hemp is commonly used to make paper & rope, more recently in food, then in fashion, and now in beauty products. Hemp cells are similar to our skin cells which helps us to absorb all of the natural goodness.

Natural skincare products by BearsBeauty
Why is it good for you? Hemp contains nourishing plant seed oils, antioxidants, cannabinoids (compounds that reduce inflammation), and THC (active ingredient in marijuana) which is highly effective for acne & dry skin. In shampoos & conditioners, it produces omega 3 & omega 6 fatty acids which work as great emollient for hair. Also, hemp is the only plant containing vitamin D which is an ideal supplement for vegans.

What are the best products?

Apothecanna Calming Pain Crème. These guys were one of the first to use hemp in beauty products in Colorado 2010 and became the first first to be licensed to use it in USA – some products contain THC which you need a medical license to obtain, but others are more widely available and Urban Outfitters carries a line.

Their pain crème contains healing arnica, soothing peppermint and rejuvenating juniper – cooling on the skin with that deep heat punch from the arnica, this is both effective and surprisingly relaxing. .

Earthly Body: They boast a huge range of products from creams to candles – I recommend the candles which you can melt, use as a massage oil and they’re edible too. They’re the perfect way to enjoy all the benefits of hemp as skincare and nutrition – plus they’re fun! Earthly body’s website also provides tons of info on the science behind their products which are all 100% drug free/

The Body Shop: Hemp Body Butter: As a well-known trusted brand, The Body Shop has incorporated hemp into some of its best loved products. The Body Butter is great for repairing dry skin – especially extremely dry skin – and it leaves your skin moisturized for up to 24 hours. Smooth, supple, soft and silky – this is the body butter I already knew and loved but with more to it.

Benefits: Stronger, thicker hair, stronger nails, softer skin, the prevention of heart disease, the relief of menstrual cramps, the list goes on… What I found is that there is no oily build up like other oil based moisturizers, and there is the visible blends and relief of blemishes. Apothecanna comes with my highest recommendation, but the others are a little more playful and fun for an introduction to hemp.

Wide Legged White Pants

By Amra B.

Wide legged white pants are a classic staple piece that is appropriate for almost any occasion and easily combined with almost any piece of clothing you have in your wardrobe. I love them because they work equally well for the office, cocktail party, and stroll around the town (or the beach in summertime). They are timelessly chic and have been introduced (and re-introduced) by numerous designers since the 70s.

I like to combine my white pants with fitted or cropped top as I feel this is the best way to show off your legs (and pants). I am also very into lace and love black on white effect. I highly recommend enhancing your “white pants look” with a little bright red lipstick; it makes the whole ensemble even extra chic!

Wishing you a wonderful day!

East Coast vs West Coast StyleE

By Rachael Shearer

As seasons change, wardrobes undergo severe rearrangement and analysis. Having recently moved from Europe to NYC, I’ve noticed my clothes becoming increasingly monochrome and my florals, prints and bolder pieces have been shoved to the back shelf. It seems to me that the West Coast has quite a European vibe – lots of color and individual pieces – whereas East Coast is more minimal and chic. This made me wonder if I could go back to my West Coast vibes, or do you have to blend with what side you’re on?

Thanks to the media…

East Coast Style: Mary Kate and Ashley Olsen, and Blake Lively
East Coast style: Mary Kate and Ashley Olsen

TV shows like Gossip Girl and 90210 freely dictate the difference between beach bums and city slickers, highlighting rich teens which unlimited finances to support their outrageous wardrobes. Similarly, A-list celebs like SJP and the Olsen twins on my side, and Katy Perry, Kendall Jenner et al on the left, seem to adopt and amplify the coastal style stereotypes. Are these the ones deciding which is which? They do it so well, it’s hard not to find yourself falling in line.

East Coast Style: The Hamptons & Jackie Kennedy Onassis
East Coast Pros & Cons

I prefer East Coast purely because it is easy. Statement pieces, chic, monochrome, minimalist look – for a Monday-Friday 9-5 lifestyle, you need to be looking slick which interchangeable outfits. Casual comes in at simple denims and converse. NYC in particular doesn’t seem too experimental – even the hipsters just copycat each other with flannels and skinny jeans. East Coast is uniform, convenient and smart.

East Coast Preps
New England Style
West Coast Pros & Cons

More colorful selections, more floral and print, a lot more mix-matching and coming up with unusual combinations. People get more experimental and bold but with a relaxed laissez faire vibe. Beach bums and surfers absolutely embody west coast for me – ripped jeans and layers of fringe vs Katy Perry’s garish luminosity? Beach, please. West Coast changes too much – something could be in one day, and out five minutes later. I wish I had the guts to wear some of the stuff, but East Coast’s classic look is timeless, and safe.

Street style

Apart from the occasional LA disaster, street style on both sides works well. East Coast sleek & chic or West Coast hippy chill vibes, the masses are improving at taking hints from tv, media and celebs, and incorporating them into a real life and affordable lifestyle. Once this summer really gets going, I’ll be forced to take a little West Coast inspo into my gloomy NYC wardrobe again!

Face It, Why Face Oils Are the Way to Go

By Lizbeth Perez

Let’s face it; the thought of slathering oil all over your face sounds a little scary. Why would anyone want to add extra oil to their skin, or spend more money on another beauty product that will probably end up next to all the other barely touched products in your medicine cabinet.  At least those were just a few of things that went through my head…at first.

I (and perhaps some of you might be too) was surprised to learn that despite the name, face oils don’t make your face greasy and full of shine.  Instead, you can expect to have skin that glows and is super soft, with only a few drops. The trick to getting these results is simple: knowing when to use them and finding the right one for your skin type.

Oils can best be described as a booster, something that when added to your regular beauty regimen will make your skin look even more gorgeous. In other words, don’t get rid of your moisturizer and face wash just yet. Be sure to follow your normal routine during the daytime and apply two-three drops of the oil at night. This way, it gives your skin enough time to fully absorb it, while you sleep. And if you’re still a little hesitant remember that regardless of your skin type might be there’s an oil out there on the market that caters to it; there are even oils that treat acne!

But, with all of the options on the market comes the difficult task of finding one that not only works for you but that meet all of the specifications that you’re looking for. Some feel too heavy, or have too strong of a fragrance, as each oil come with different properties; others might leave your face shiny for an entire day while others might not moisturize you enough, leaving you yearning for your more traditional creams and lotions.

Read below for a few (basic) recommendations based on your skin type!

1. Dry Skin- Coconut oil

My skin falls into this category, and I remember how apprehensive I was to try this, even after several friends told me how wonderful it was. Luckily for me, I eventually succumbed to the peer pressure, and I since the day I did, have never gone back to any other moisturizer. Coconut oil is the most saturated plant source of fat around, (91% saturation compared to olive oil at 14% alone) Therefore; after slathering on this lipid-packed oil expect it to create “a heavier barrier” helping skin stay supple and smooth.

More on the surprising health benefits of coconut oil here
2. Oily Skin- Tea Tree Oil

Tea tree oil is often associated with spot treatments, but using it all over the face can help prevent breakouts and soothe irritated skin. It’s antimicrobial properties help fight a variety of infections and even kills bacteria that are involved in the development of blemishes.

3. Combination- Sandalwood Oil

For centuries, sandalwood has been used in Ayurvedic medicine, massage, and fragrance. Sandalwood oil is 90% sesquiterpenic alcohols, which is a fancy way of saying “fatty alcohols”. This makes it the perfect pick for combination skin since it hydrates without causing any blemishes or acne.

4. Anti-Aging- Argan Oil

If you’re starting to notice fine lines and wrinkles, any oil that has Argan Oil is what I recommend. It contains essential fatty acids and antioxidants, like vitamin E, which keep cells looking healthy and functioning.

More on the benefits of using Argan Oil here.
